I am an unfortunate recipient of regular ocular migraines. Recently, I started to pay more attention to what sets me off and I have narrowed it down to two things; overexposure to sunlight and strong chemical scents. I don’t cope particularly well in heat and no matter how hydrated I stay. If I’m out in the sun for too long, I can pretty much guarantee to be in severe pain later so naturally, I try to limit my exposure. Strong scents are another big trigger for me which is unfortunate because I used to really love the smell of a chemically cleaned room and it was a huge motivator. I felt sick far too regularly to continue though and knew I had to make some changes. I got a headache every single time I cleaned the shower because I’d go inside, spray each glass panel and then inhale the smell for about 3 – 5 minutes while cleaning. I would also always sneeze when spraying down kitchen and bathroom benches with regular spray and wipe to sanitize and clean them.
About a year-and-a-half ago, I decided to try and make my own cleaning products to try and reduce the amount of chemicals I inhale during my weekly cleans. Each recipe was a simple mixture of vinegar, essential oils and dish soap depending on what I was cleaning. I still wanted to make sure there was some sort of lingering smell post clean so I could sustain my motivators which is why most of my recipes have a lot of essential oils in the ingredients list. My absolute favourite essential oil to add to my cleaning products is Eucalyptus oil and Peppermint oil because I love the smell and it is a primary antibacterial agent. I use both throughout my all purpose cleaning sprays for benches as well as a floor spray before I mop.
When I was researching essential oils, I received a lot of recommendation for pricy MLM companies and plenty of consultants to go through. I knew that if I was going to put in all the effort to make my own stuff and commit to this lifestyle change, having to go through a consultant to place orders each time and fork out a bunch of money was going to piss me off. I figured that unless I’m ingesting essential oils (which I’m not) and am using them for cleaning and diffusing, they just needed to be 100% pure and I didn’t really worry about anything else like bogus certifications that bump up the price. Bosisto’s is Australian made, very affordable and sold in Coles, Woolworths and Chemist Warehouse; making it very easy to stock up. They also have their own line of multipurpose products that I use in the bathroom and on glass because I can’t quite get my consistency right when I make my own.
I was fortunate enough to be able to collaborate with them recently and they have released some fantastic new products which I use every day. I love their aromatherapy range which I spray on all fabric upholstery and curtains whenever I change the bed sheets. This also adds to the lingering scent I like to enjoy post a clean and it’s actually quite good for you and you state of mind, especially their sleep range which is my personal favourite. I also use their sensitive laundry powder when washing clothes I intend on donating because although Dom and I have no skin issues from commercial laundry powder, I do know plenty of people who have had reactions (like my dad) and would rather be safe than sorry with donated clothing
